Songs & Scripture: Thy Will (Hillary Scott)

“Thy Will,” written & sung by Lady Antebellum’s lead singer Hillary Scott was inspired after a tragedy struck. I love this song because it brings the question of how to trust God as a Christian during times of suffering. May the verses I found in my study help you renew your faith and joy in the Lord as they helped me.

I’m so confused (Proverbs 3:5-7, Luke 24:38, 1 Corinthians 14:33)
I know I heard You loud and clear (1 Samuel 3:10, 1 Kings 19:12-13, Isaiah 30:19-21, Acts 9:4-5, Acts 11:12, Acts 13:2, Acts 16:6-7)
So, I followed through (John 14:15, 2 John 1:6, Revelation 14:12)
Somehow I ended up here (Isaiah 30:20, 2 Timothy 2:9, 2 Timothy 3:12)
I don’t wanna think
I may never understand (John 13:7, 1 Corinthians 13:12)
That my broken heart is a part of Your plan (Genesis 50:20, Proverbs 17:3, Isaiah 30:20, Isaiah 48:10, Hosea 6:1, Zechariah 13:9, Acts 14:22, Romans 5:3, Romans 8:17, 2 Corinthians 4:8-11, 2 Corinthians 4:17-18, Philippians 1:12, Hebrews 5:8, James 5:10-11, 1 Peter 2:19-20, 1 Peter 3:14, 1 Peter 3:17, 1 Peter 4:12-13)
When I try to pray (Romans 8:26-27)
All I’ve got is hurt and these four words (Matthew 6:10)

Thy will be done (Psalm 31:5, Matthew 6:10, Matthew 26:39, Matthew 26:42, Mark 14:36, Luke 22:42, John 4:34, John 5:30, John 6:38, 1 Peter 3:17, 1 Peter 4:19)
Thy will be done
Thy will be done

I know You’re good (Exodus 34:6, Psalm 34:8, Psalm 52:1, Psalm 52:9, Psalm 119:68, James 1:17)
But this don’t feel good right now (Psalm 39:12, Psalm 61:1)
And I know You think
Of things I could never think about (Deuteronomy 29:29, Job 26:14, Psalm 147:5, Isaiah 40:28, Isaiah 55:8-9)
It’s hard to count it all joy (Romans 5:3-5, James 1:2-4, 1 Peter 1:6)
Distracted by the noise (1 Kings 19:11-13)
Just trying to make sense
Of all Your promises* (2 Corinthians 1:20)
Sometimes I gotta stop (Psalm 46:10)
Remember that You’re God (OT: Exodus 3:14, Deuteronomy 4:29, Deuteronomy 4:35, Deuteronomy 4:39, Deuteronomy 6:4, Deuteronomy 10:17, Deuteronomy 32:29, 2 Samuel 7:22, 1 Kings 8:60, 2 Kings 5:15, 2 Kings 19:15, 1 Chronicles 17:20, Nehemiah 9:6, Psalm 8:3-4, Psalm 18:31, Psalm 46:10, Psalm 86:10, Psalm 136:3, Isaiah 7:14, Isaiah 9:6, Isaiah 37:16, Isaiah 37:20, Isaiah 43:10-11, Isaiah 45:21, Isaiah 46:9, Daniel 2:47, Hosea 13:4, Joel 2:27, Zechariah 9:9, Zechariah 14:9. And I am not (Job 2:9-10, Psalm 100:3, 1 Corinthians 6:19-20)
So

Thy will be done (x3)
Like a child on my knees all that comes to me is (Psalm 131:2)
Thy will be done (x3)

I know You see me (1 Samuel 16:7, Psalm 10:14, Psalm 33:13, Psalm 34:18, Psalm 56:8, Psalm 139:1-3, Proverbs 15:11, Hebrews 2:18, Hebrews 4:13, Hebrews 4:16)

Your plans are for me (Jeremiah 29:11, Romans 8:31-32)
Goodness You have in store (Job 19:25, Job 23:10, Psalm 31:19, Psalm 37:11, Psalm 66:10-12, Ecclesiastes 8:12, Matthew 19:29, Matthew 25:34, Luke 12:32, Romans 8:18, Romans 8:28, 1 Corinthians 2:9, 2 Corinthians 4:16-18, Hebrews 11:16, James 1:12, James 5:11, 1 Peter 1:3-9, 1 Peter 5:4, 1 Peter 5:10, Revelation 2:10)
(repeat x 1)
So

Thy will be done (x3)
Like a child on my knees all that comes to me is
Thy will be done (x3)

I know You see me

Songs & Scripture: “Lay Me Down” (Chris Tomlin, Jason Ingram, Jonas Myrin, and Matt Redman)

I’m dedicating this Songs & Scripture post to a good long-time friend and North American missionary, Owen Grey, who works with Athletes in Action at Wilmington College in Wilmington, OH. He introduced this song to me just a few days ago (yeah, I guess I’m behind the times) and told me it’s one of his favorites because the song is basically about letting God take control and yielding to him.

This is something Owen would know about, because he didn’t originally plan to go into ministry full-time:

“During my 4 years at Eastern Michigan University the Lord used my time competing on the swim team to introduce me to the need my fellow athletes had for Jesus. In my senior year I had the opportunity to disciple two underclassmen on my team who were new to their relationship with Christ. Experiencing their passion, excitement, and desire for a changed life as a result gave me far more joy and sense of purpose than the engineering degree I was studying. Through these experiences I have felt God’s call into the vocation of full-time ministry, specifically with athletes.”

If you’d like to learn about supporting Owen’s ministry, you can click here or email him directly at owen.grey(at)athletesinaction.org.

As usual for all my Songs & Scripture posts, I have links to related Bible verses after each lyric. (You can right click to select “open in new tab” if you don’t want to keep hitting “back” every time you look up a verse).

Songs & Scripture: “Hosanna (Praise is Rising)” (Brenton Brown and Paul Baloche)

"They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them....And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!" ~Matthew 21:7, 9 (Photo credit: Andreas Krappweis)

I remember singing this song in youth group growing up, but have recently come back to it. ‘Cause when we see You, we find strength to face the day is still the cry of my heart.

After a time of singing my heart out to God, or glimpsing Him through nature, or reading a familiar Bible passage anew as if God wrote it exactly for me, or someone’s unexpected kindness, or a story of redemption, or another amazing piece of evidence of God’s existence or the validity of the Bible, that’s when I find strength to face another day.

Songs & Scripture: “Break Every Chain” (Will Reagan)

Chain Link
Chain Link (Photo credit: small world)

“Break Every Chain” is a powerful, building song, especially for those who have ever struggled or currently struggle with an addiction. Kim Walker Smith does a really great rendition of this song, but I found Tasha Cobbs’ version even better. It’s a very simple song lyric-wise, since it mostly repeats on itself.

Songs & Scripture: “After All (Holy)” (David Crowder, Mark Waldrop, Matt Maher, Mike Dodson)

Stars, and the glow over the Halemaumau crater...

David Crowder Band has put out some pretty awesome worship songs, but when I was listening to this one on the radio, I almost pulled my car over it was so good and I couldn’t help but praise God.

The lyrics are so poetic that often it’s hard to find a verse exactly quoted, but nevertheless very biblical, so I’ve included verses that are related to the lyrics or further prove their point for this Songs & Scripture post.
