Songs & Scripture: “Mighty to Save” (Ben Fielding, Reuben Morgan)

This song has become a praise staple in many churches, and is based heavily around Zephaniah 3:17:

However, there are so many other verses that are alluded to in these lyrics, more than I ever realized!  Once again I’ve linked most of the verses to the ESV version, but some of the lyrics more closely follow either the NASB or NIV version, so I’ve linked those as they apply.

I’ve featured a lyric video of this song by Laura Story, in part because I think this video was so beautifully done, but Hillsong United also has a wonderful version (see that here).

Everyone needs compassion (Matthew 9:36, Mark 6:34)
A love thats never failing (1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV)
Let mercy fall on me (Psalm 145:9)

Everyone needs forgiveness (Romans 3:23-24)
The kindness of a savior (Ephesians 2:7, Titus 3:4-5)
The hope of nations (Isaiah 42:1, Matthew 12:15-21 NIV)

Saviour he can move the mountains (Ezekiel 38:20, Matthew 17:20)
My God is mighty to save (Isaiah 63:1, Zephaniah 3:17)
He is mighty to save
Forever author of salvation (Hebrews 12:2 NASB)
He rose and conquered the grave (Hosea 13:14 NIV)
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as you find me
All my fears and failures
Fill my life again (Ephesians 3:19)

I give my life to follow (Matthew 16:24, Luke 9:23)
Everything I believe in
Now i surrender

Shine your light and let the whole world see (Matthew 5:14-16)
We’re singing for the glory of the risen king JESUS (Matthew 28:6, 1 Corinthians 10:31)

Songs & Scripture: “Your Love Never Fails” (Chris Mcclarney, Anthony Skinner)

If you haven’t already figured it out, I make sure to credit the writer of each worship song I feature, not necessarily the artist that made that song famous.

Once again, I am sharing a song that Jesus Culture has carried around the world, but originally it was written by Chris Mcclarney and Anthony Skinner. The story of how that song went out clearly has God’s hand on it, and is encouraging in itself. I recommend you read that here.

I hope you enjoy this post of Your Love Never Fails. I know I really am growing through this Songs & Scripture personal Bible study and hope it blesses you to know what Bible verses are behind the lyrics of worship songs.

Nothing can separate (Romans 8:38-39)
Even if I ran away (Psalm 139:7-10)
Your love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV)

I know I still make mistakes (Romans 7:15-19)
But You have new mercies for me everyday (Lamentations 3:22-23)
Your love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV)

You stay the same through the ages (Hebrews 13:8, James 1:17)
Your love never changes (Malachi 3:6)
There maybe pain in the night but joy comes in the morning (Psalm 30:5)

And when the oceans rage
I don’t have to be afraid (Psalm 46:1-3, 1 John 4:18)
Because I know that You love me (Psalm 59:17, John 3:16, Romans 5:8, Galatians 2:20, 1 John 3:1, 1 John 4:9-101 John 4:16)  Note: I had to cut these off! There are so many verse about God’s love for us! I hope you take that away!

Your love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV)

The wind is strong and the water’s deep (Matthew 14:30-31)
But I’m not alone in these open seas (Mark 4:37-41)
Cause Your love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV)

The chasm is far too wide (Isaiah 59:1-2Luke 16:26)
I never thought I’d reach the other side (John 5:24)
But Your love never fails (1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV)

You make, all things, work together for my good. (Romans 8:28)

Finally, I want to share a perhaps more beautiful video than Jesus Culture’s version: a young girl named Shaela Warkentin, in a hospital bed singing Your Love Never Fails after being left blind by a car accident. May her testimony encourage you of the truth in the Scriptures behind this song.

With love,

Songs & Scripture: “Better Is One Day” (Matt Redman)

Modern-day Temple Mount, Jerusalem

Matt Redman originally wrote this song, but I love this version by Charlie Hall. The opening and main cry of the song is from Psalm 84.  I hope you enjoy seeing how the Scriptures are practically quoted for each line of this song.

How lovely is Your dwelling place, Oh Lord Almighty  (Psalm 84:1)
My soul longs and even faints for You (Psalm 84:2)
For here my heart is satisfied, within Your presence (Psalm 63:5)
I sing beneath the shadow of Your wings (Psalm 63:7)

Better is one day in Your courts
Better is one day in Your house
Better is one day in Your courts
Than thousands elsewhere (Psalm 84:10)

One thing I ask, and I would seek, to see Your beauty,
To find You in the place Your glory dwells (Psalm 27:4)
My heart and flesh cry out,
For You the living God (Psalm 84:2 again)
Your Spirit’s water for my soul (Psalm 63:1, Isaiah 44:3John 4:14, Revelation 22:17)
I’ve tasted and I’ve seen, (Psalm 34:8)
Come once again to me.
I will draw near to You. (Ecclesiastes 5:1, Hebrews 4:16James 4:8)
I will draw near to You

Will you draw near to Him today?

With Love,

Songs & Scripture: “One Thing Remains (Love Never Fails)” (Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black)

Jesus Culture made this song popular, and for good reason!

However, originally the song was written by Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, and Christa Black, so my thanks go to them for a heart-moving and truth-saturated worship song.

I’ve changed it up by linking some of the verses to the NIV version because that version more closely follows the song lyrics.

Higher than the mountains that I face (Psalm 46:1-3)
Stronger than the power of the grave (Acts 2:24-27, Romans 6:9, Hebrews 2:14-15)
Constant through the trial and the change (Numbers 23:19Hebrews 13:8, James 1:17)
One thing remains (x2) (1 Corinthians 13:13)

Your love never fails it never gives up it never runs out on me (x3) (1 Corinthians 13:7-8, 2 Timothy 2:13)

On and one and on and on it goes (Psalm 100:5Psalm 136, Ephesians 3:17-19)
It overwhelms and satisfies my soul (Psalm 90:14, Psalm 103:5Isaiah 55:1-3, Jeremiah 31:25, John 7:37-38)
And I never ever have to be afraid (Psalm 23:4Psalm 27:1-3Psalm 91:5-7, Luke 12:4-5, Romans 8:15, 2 Timothy 1:71 John 4:18)
One thing remains

In death and in life (Romans 14:8)
I’m confident and covered by the power of your great love (Psalm 91:4)
My debt is paid (Matthew 18:23-27, Colossians 2:13-14)
There’s nothing that can separate my heart from your great love (Romans 8:37-39)

With love,
