Songs & Scripture: The River (Jordan Feliz)

This song brings to mind some amazing baptism services I’ve been a part of where the church is all singing as our new brother or sister comes out of the water and the joy of the Lord seizes our hearts! Does this not make you long for more to come to know God’s amazing grace? Not only does this song bring to mind coming to the Lord for the first time and being washed into Jesus’ righteousness, but as we come to the Lord in prayer daily he continues to sanctify our hearts and change us more into His image.

I will say that this song is more vague than I like. Like a lot of CCM, it never mentions “sin” or “evil,” only stains and troubles (“mistakes” is a common one used in a lot of other songs), therefore how can we rejoice fully if we do not understand what we are given mercy for? But I still really benefited from looking up all the river references in the Scriptures and do not believe anything is inherently incorrect in this song. Plus, I love the music– it is unique & talented.

The River
Jordan Feliz

I know a place
Where we can go
To lay the troubles down eating your soul (Psalm 63:1, Psalm 143:6, Jeremiah 6:16, Matthew 11:28-30, 1 Peter 5:17, 1 John 5:3)
I know a place
Where mercy flows (Ezekiel 47:1, Psalm 46:4, Psalm 87:7)
Take the stains make you whiter than snow (Psalm 51:7, Isaiah 1:18, Revelation 7:14)

Like a tide it is rising up
Deep inside
A current that moves and makes you come alive
Living water (Psalm 36:9, Isaiah 55:1, Zechariah 14:8, John 4:10, John 4:14 John 7:37-38, Revelation 21:6, Revelation 22:1, Revelation 22:17)
That brings the dead to life (Ephesians 2:1-6, Colossians 2:12-14)

We’re goin down to the river (2 Samuel 16:14, Psalm 46:4, Isaiah 55:1, Joel 3:18, Zechariah 14:8, Matthew 3:6, Mark 1:5, Mark 1:8)
Down to the river
Down to the river to pray (Matthew 3:11, Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38, Acts 3:19)
Let’s get washed by the water (1 Peter 3:21, Revelation 22:14)
Washed by the water
And rise up in amazing grace (Isaiah 12:3, Romans 6:4, Colossians 2:12, Titus 3:5)
Let’s go down, down, down to the river
You will leave changed (2 Corinthians 5:17, Revelation 21:4-5)
Let’s go down, down, down to the river
Never the same (2 Corinthians 5:17, Revelation 21:4-5)

I’ve seen it move
In my own life
Took me from dusty roads into Paradise (Isaiah 32:2, Isaiah 43:19, Isaiah 44:3, Revelation 22:14)
All of my dirt (Isaiah 64:6, Zechariah 3:3-5, 1 Peter 3:21)
All of my shame (Isaiah 59:12-13, 1 Peter 3:21, Revelation 3:18)
Drowned in the streams that have made me born again (John 3:3-7, Acts 8:38, Romans 6:3-6)
