Songs & Scripture: “Mighty to Save” (Ben Fielding, Reuben Morgan)

This song has become a praise staple in many churches, and is based heavily around Zephaniah 3:17:

However, there are so many other verses that are alluded to in these lyrics, more than I ever realized!  Once again I’ve linked most of the verses to the ESV version, but some of the lyrics more closely follow either the NASB or NIV version, so I’ve linked those as they apply.

I’ve featured a lyric video of this song by Laura Story, in part because I think this video was so beautifully done, but Hillsong United also has a wonderful version (see that here).

Everyone needs compassion (Matthew 9:36, Mark 6:34)
A love thats never failing (1 Corinthians 13:8 NIV)
Let mercy fall on me (Psalm 145:9)

Everyone needs forgiveness (Romans 3:23-24)
The kindness of a savior (Ephesians 2:7, Titus 3:4-5)
The hope of nations (Isaiah 42:1, Matthew 12:15-21 NIV)

[*chorus*]
Saviour he can move the mountains (Ezekiel 38:20, Matthew 17:20)
My God is mighty to save (Isaiah 63:1, Zephaniah 3:17)
He is mighty to save
Forever author of salvation (Hebrews 12:2 NASB)
He rose and conquered the grave (Hosea 13:14 NIV)
Jesus conquered the grave

So take me as you find me
All my fears and failures
Fill my life again (Ephesians 3:19)

I give my life to follow (Matthew 16:24, Luke 9:23)
Everything I believe in
Now i surrender

[Bridge]

Shine your light and let the whole world see (Matthew 5:14-16)
We’re singing for the glory of the risen king JESUS (Matthew 28:6, 1 Corinthians 10:31)
