Songs & Scripture: “One Thing Remains (Love Never Fails)” (Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, Christa Black)

Jesus Culture made this song popular, and for good reason!

However, originally the song was written by Brian Johnson, Jeremy Riddle, and Christa Black, so my thanks go to them for a heart-moving and truth-saturated worship song.

I’ve changed it up by linking some of the verses to the NIV version because that version more closely follows the song lyrics.

Higher than the mountains that I face (Psalm 46:1-3)
Stronger than the power of the grave (Acts 2:24-27, Romans 6:9, Hebrews 2:14-15)
Constant through the trial and the change (Numbers 23:19Hebrews 13:8, James 1:17)
One thing remains (x2) (1 Corinthians 13:13)

Your love never fails it never gives up it never runs out on me (x3) (1 Corinthians 13:7-8, 2 Timothy 2:13)

On and one and on and on it goes (Psalm 100:5Psalm 136, Ephesians 3:17-19)
It overwhelms and satisfies my soul (Psalm 90:14, Psalm 103:5Isaiah 55:1-3, Jeremiah 31:25, John 7:37-38)
And I never ever have to be afraid (Psalm 23:4Psalm 27:1-3Psalm 91:5-7, Luke 12:4-5, Romans 8:15, 2 Timothy 1:71 John 4:18)
One thing remains

In death and in life (Romans 14:8)
I’m confident and covered by the power of your great love (Psalm 91:4)
My debt is paid (Matthew 18:23-27, Colossians 2:13-14)
There’s nothing that can separate my heart from your great love (Romans 8:37-39)

With love,

  1. Thank you. From a 55 year old pastor’s wife in a rural town with the responsibility of nurturing the 1/2 dozen teens in our midst with the precious word of God.
Tomorrow we are meeting to rehearse this song for a special for our offertory. One teen is very good at the guitar, and we sang it all summer in our youth gatherings. I wanted to make it deeper–finding a few verse, but when browsing the internet, found THIS! Much deeper than I intended–an entire BIble study for them! (and you did the hard work.) Thank you again.

    1. This has encouraged me so much today! I have set about this project with a God given urgency that I haven’t been able to explain. If even you and your youth are the only ones who benefit from this post I would feel God’s purpose for this entire site has been accomplished. God bless you for your service to the youth. 🙂

  2. really appreciate the time and effort you put into this! We’re going to be singing this song this weekend, and I’m going to have people read a scripture for each line before we sing each part. Thanks!

    1. Wow, that’s awesome! I hope it encourages your church body to meditate on those scriptures! Thanks for letting me know, it is so encouraging to hear!
