Songs & Scripture: “You Are My Portion” (Darrell Evans)

“The antidote for worry is worship.”

~quoted by Pastor Milton Campbell, The Midtown Bridge Church, Atlanta, GA, original source unknown

This song has blessed me in times of great anxiety and worry, and it has been playing over and over in my head this week as my pastor has been preaching out of Matthew 6. It’s an oldie but a goodie! There is a ton of Scripture hidden in these lyrics, I’ve tried to tease out the most obvious.

(sorry, the lyric video was taken down, but this man does a really great rendition!)

You Are My Portion (by Darrell Evans)

Father I will not worry about tomorrow or all of its questions (Matthew 6:34)
Father I will just trust you (Psalm 37:5, Proverbs 3:5, Jeremiah 17:7-8)
And I will be waiting for treasures in heaven (Matthew 6:20)

My heart is with you for there my treasure lies (Matthew 6:21, Matthew 13:44)
My eyes are on you for you are my delight (Matthew 6:22-23, Hebrews 12:1-2)

Though I may not wear the garments of princes (Matthew 6:29-30)
You are my portion (x2) (Psalm 16:5, Psalm 73:26, Psalm 119:57, Psalm 142:5, Lamentations 3:24)
For you clothe me in your righteousness (Isaiah 61:10, Romans 13:12-14, Galatians 3:27, Revelation 3:18)
You are my portion (x2)
Though I may not sit at the table of kings (2 Samuel 9:13)
You are my portion (x2)
For you feed me from the abundance of your hand (Psalm 23:5, Ezekiel 3:3)
You are my portion
You are my portion, Lord

My everything, you meet my every need (Philippians 4:19)
You cover me (Ruth 3:9, Psalm 91:4)
And make me be at peace (John 14:27, Philippians 4:6-7, 2 Thessalonians 3:16)

Maybe you’re worried because you haven’t been worshipping. If so, I pray the peace of God which surpasses all understanding will guard your heart & your mind in Christ Jesus today. He is our Peace.

With love,
